ABOUT THE ARTIST
The concept of ‘the other’ as well as the dichotomy in our world is of great importance and focus in the paintings of Felipe Ramirez. The artist explores traditionally conflicting concepts and attempts to bring them together in his work. He sees himself in the paintings he creates; hard and soft, masculine and feminine, structure and chaos, these are just a few of the ideas he aims to explore. He employs various methods learned over years of working with paints to reach the desired result of each work. Whether it is sewing fabrics together to stretch, or nailing wooden boards to each other and allowing the medium he uses to do what it does on the differing surfaces.
After living most of his life in Los Angeles and working with the Los Angeles based art collective CENTAVR for a few years he decided to move to San Francisco to study painting at SFAI. While in the BFA program he worked with some great professors but gravitated more towards work that was unlike anything he had ever done before. To look inward as apposed to what is physically visible and make paintings from that was something he found challenging and exiting. It was something he felt compelled to explore. Since his time at SFAI he continues to do illustration work and portraiture but focuses more of his time on his abstract work.
